Immutable backups protecting business data from ransomware

Immutable Backups: The Cyber Insurance Question That Catches Businesses Out

Immutable backups are now one of the most important parts of cyber insurance and ransomware protection.

However, many businesses are not sure what they are or whether they already have them in place.

That becomes a problem when a renewal form asks:

“Do you maintain immutable, air-gapped, or offline backups?”

Because if you answer this incorrectly, it can affect both your cover and your ability to claim.

So let’s break it down in simple terms.

What is the real problem with backups?

Most businesses believe they already have backups in place.

However, modern ransomware attacks have changed the rules.

Attackers now target backups first.

So if they can delete your backups using stolen admin access, you cannot recover your data.

That leaves you with one option. Pay the ransom.

Because of this, insurers now want proof that your backups can survive an attack.

What are immutable backups?

Immutable backups are backup copies that nobody can change or delete for a fixed period of time.

This includes:

  • You
  • Your IT provider
  • Anyone using stolen admin credentials

In practice, this means the data is locked at the storage level.

So even if someone gains full control, they still cannot remove or edit the backup.

This is what makes immutable backups different from standard backup solutions.

Three backup setups that are NOT immutable backups

1. A NAS or external drive in your office

A network storage device is designed to be accessible.

However, that also means ransomware can reach it.

If attackers gain admin access, they can delete everything on it.

So on its own, this does not count as an immutable backup.

2. Microsoft 365 retention used as backup

This is one of the most common mistakes.

Microsoft keeps the platform running. However, you remain responsible for your data.

If an attacker gains access to a global admin account, they can still delete or purge data.

So retention policies do not replace proper immutable backups.

3. Cloud backup with immutability turned off

Many systems support immutable backups. However, the feature is not always enabled.

Because of this, businesses often assume they are protected when they are not.

If immutability is switched off, your backups can still be deleted.

Three questions to check your immutable backups

If you are unsure, start here.

  1. Are our backups immutable?
If yes, how long is the protection period?
  2. Can stolen admin credentials delete our backups?
    The answer must be no.
  3. Can you show proof?
Screenshots or documentation should confirm this.

If your provider cannot clearly answer these, then your backups may not meet the requirement.

What an immutable backup setup should look like

A strong setup includes several key elements working together.

  • Immutability is switched on and enforced
  • Backup access is separate from your main admin accounts
  • The retention window is long enough to cover hidden threats
  • Backups are tested regularly

Because attackers can sit inside systems for days or weeks, short retention periods are not enough.

So most insurers expect at least 14 to 30 days.

What to do if you do not have immutable backups

First, be honest on your insurance form.

It may increase your premium. However, it protects you from bigger problems later.

Next, speak to your IT provider.

In many cases, immutable backups are already available and just need to be switched on.

If not, this is something you should fix before your next renewal.

Do not guess or assume.

Because if your setup does not match your answer, your policy could be invalid.

Why immutable backups matter for your business

Immutable backups give you control when everything else fails.

They allow you to:

  • Recover your data quickly
  • Avoid paying ransom
  • Stay compliant with insurance requirements

More importantly, they give you peace of mind.
