More good news for accessibility in Windows 11

When images hide the information you need

Have you ever opened a document or presentation and realised half the information is locked away inside an image or graphic you can’t quite make sense of?

Maybe it’s a complicated chart.
Or a photo packed with crucial detail — but no one thought to add a description.

For many people, this isn’t just frustrating. It can be a real barrier to getting work done.

A new Windows 11 feature designed for accessibility

Microsoft is testing a new Windows 11 feature called Describe Image, and it’s designed to remove moments like this — especially for people with accessibility needs.

The feature is powered by local AI, built directly into your PC rather than relying on cloud services.

How Describe Image works

On Copilot+ PCs — the new generation of Windows devices that run AI directly on the computer — you’ll find Describe Image inside the Click to Do menu.

When you select it, your PC instantly generates a detailed description of whatever you’re looking at, whether that’s:

  • An image
  • A chart
  • A graph or diagram

The first time you use it, Windows sets up the AI models it needs. After that, everything runs locally on your device.

Your data stays private and secure

Because Describe Image works entirely on your PC, no images or data are sent elsewhere.

The descriptions stay private, secure, and under your control — which is especially important for businesses handling sensitive information.

Who can use it right now?

At the moment, Describe Image is rolling out to Windows Insiders on the Dev Channel using Snapdragon‑powered Copilot+ PCs.

Microsoft has confirmed that AMD and Intel Copilot+ PCs will also receive the feature soon.

Why this matters for real‑world work

At first glance, this might not sound like a huge deal. But think about the impact in day‑to‑day work.

Imagine:

  • A team member with a visual impairment understanding a complex graph in seconds — without waiting for someone else to explain it
  • A busy employee quickly skimming a report and getting instant insight into a set of images
  • Fewer interruptions and fewer accessibility roadblocks

This is about removing barriers, not ticking compliance boxes.

Accessibility benefits everyone

When employees can easily access information, they:

  • Work more confidently
  • Collaborate more smoothly
  • Get tasks done faster

That’s good for individuals — and great for your business.

Windows 11 continues to quietly add thoughtful improvements like this. Describe Image is another step towards technology that fits around people, not the other way around.

Thinking about Copilot+ PCs?

If you’re already exploring Copilot+ PCs, this is one more reason to be excited about what’s coming next.
